Padmabhushan Dr. Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil was born on
22 September 1887 at Kumbhoj in Kolhapur district,
Maharashtra. His native place is Aitawade Budruk,
District Sangli. Though he came from a Jain family,
he rejected rigid social practices and dedicated his life
to removing social inequalities through education.
Rayat Shikshan Sanstha is one of the leading educational
institutions in Asia. Since its establishment, the institution
has focused on providing education to the poor, deprived,
and socially backward sections of society. The founder,
Dr. Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil, devoted his entire life to
the cause of mass education.
During his school days, he was greatly influenced by
Rajarshi Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj of Kolhapur,
who strongly supported social equality and education
for backward communities. He also drew inspiration
from Mahatma Jyotirao Phule and actively participated
in social reform activities.
Bhaurao Patil realized that education was the only way
to remove social injustice and uplift society. With this vision,
he founded Rayat Shikshan Sanstha in 1919 by starting
a boarding house at Kale, Taluka Karad, District Satara.
Later, the institution expanded rapidly across Maharashtra.
He believed that education empowers people to enjoy
the true fruits of freedom and helps eliminate social,
economic, and cultural slavery. His contribution to education
and social reform remains inspirational for generations.
